Brief description

The library of the Institute of Sinology keeps around 110.000 printed books. In addition the collection comprises a large number of important Collectanea (congshu 叢書), about 1.000 Western and Chinese periodicals as well as 4.000 Korean items. The collection was first established in 1939. Its focus is on the area of the traditional Sinology, in particular philosophy, religion, literature and history. Moreover we have a special section on South China and Hong Kong and Macao.

The catalogue is fully accessible through the internet (with the exception for certain congshu-titles and rare books).

The library is equipped with computer terminals for immediate search purposes. Furthermore we offer in our library certain research facilities that allow access to full text data sets, i.e. Siku quanshu 四庫全書.

The East-Asian-Collection of the Bavarian State Library

Students and scholars may also use the outstanding sinological collection of the Bavarian State Library, which is located about 600m from the institute. The works in East and Southeast languages in that library include a collection of circa 10.000 items in the reference section. The Bavarian State Library focuses on classical literature, local history and archaeology.
